What does the term "vitamins" mean?

Vitamins are organic substances found naturally in food. Vitamins are necessary for us to absorb nutrients in the foods we consume. Vitamins cannot come from the body so food must provide them.

Two types of vitamins exist: water-soluble vitamin and fat-soluble vitamin. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve easily when they are dissolved in water. Some examples include vitamin C,B1 and B2 vitamins (thiamine), B2 and riboflavin, B3 and B6 vitamins (niacin), folic acids, biotin, pantothenic acids, and cholesterol. The liver and fat soluble vitamins are stored within the liver and in fatty tissue. These include vitamin D, E and K, as well as beta carotene.

Vitamins are classified based on their biological activity. There are eight major categories of vitamins.

  • A – Essential for normal growth, and the maintenance of good health.
  • C – essential for proper nerve function.
  • D - necessary for healthy bones and teeth.
  • E is necessary for good vision, reproduction.
  • K – Required for healthy nerves & muscles.
  • P - Essential for strong bones and teeth.
  • Q – aids digestion of iron and iron absorption
  • R – Required for the formation of red blood vessels.

The recommended daily intake (RDA), of vitamins varies with age, gender and physical condition. RDA values are set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

For example, the RDA for vitamin A is 400 micrograms per dayfor adults 19 years or older. However, pregnant women need 600 micrograms per day because it is important for fetal development. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Infants under one year of age require 700 micrograms per day, but this amount decreases to 500 micrograms per day between 9 months and 12 months of age.

Children ages 1-18years who are obese need 800 micrograms per day while those who are overweight need 1000 micrograms per day and children who are underweight need 1200 micrograms per day to meet their nutritional needs.

2200 mg of vitamin A per day is required for children aged 4-8 who have been diagnosed by anemia.

2000 micrograms per person is necessary for general health. Breastfeeding or pregnant women require 3000 micrograms per daily due to higher nutrient demands.

1500 micrograms is the recommended daily intake for adults aged 70+, who lose approximately 10% of muscle each year.

Women who are pregnant, nursing or breastfeeding need more than the RDA. Pregnant women need 4000 micrograms per dayduring pregnancy and 2500 micrograms per day after delivery. Breastfeeding mothers require 5000 micrograms daily when breast milk production is occurring.
